Listing and URL Types – Uniform Resource Locator


Search engines give a higher preference to sites that have more authority and information. As you perform your SEOC review of your Top 5 competing sites; you will take note of the different URL’s – Uniform Resource Locator. The listings shown will determine how long it will take for you to rank for your keyword or keyword phrase on Google’s.

.EDU – sites that have that ending are educational institutes. They may be public or private schools, elementary or grade schools. These sites typically will have thousands of inlinks that in turn increase their page rank. In addition, there are several sites that reference them, because they are primarily informational the Page Rank will be higher and harder to outrank.

.GOV – sites are Government and State Agencies. Like the .EDU sites these typically will have thousands of inlinks that in turn increase their page rank. In addition, there are several sites that reference them, because they are primarily informational the Page Rank will be higher and harder to outrank.

.INFO, .NET, .BIZ, – are sites that do not carry as much weight as .EDU or .GOV and you will have a better chance to outrank them.

LISTING TYPES ON GOOGLE

Authority – you can identify this type of listing by not only is a link to their homepage included, but to other pages on their site as well.

Dual – when one site has multiple url’s that rank in the top 10 Google will combine the two listing and indent one under the other.

Image results – sometimes they appear in your search results for your keyword or phrase.

Video results – Google video results are from YouTube, Metacafe and some others.

Sponsored – are the ads that appear at the top of your search results. Advertisers are paying for those spots.

News results– these results usually appear when you search for newsworthy topics.

Shopping results- sometimes Google will use product results that have been imported into Google Base Database, from eBay Store feeds, or from other Google partners.

Twitter results –if you are searching for a hot topic you may find a Twitter result.
